Dodge City, Kansas – Travel across western Kansas could become difficult within hours Sunday morning as wind gusts rapidly climb toward 50 mph, especially along open stretches of U.S. 50 and U.S. 83.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, winds will increase shortly after sunrise Sunday as a cold front moves through, with sustained speeds of 25 to 30 mph and peak gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph by late morning through the afternoon.

The strongest impacts are expected from Dodge City to Garden City, Hays, and Great Bend, where crosswinds may affect high-profile vehicles. Areas near Goodland, Liberal, and Medicine Lodge will also see gusts exceeding 40 mph, with northwest winds shifting more northerly through the day, ushering in cooler air.

Drivers should prepare for sudden lane drift, especially on east-west roadways like I-70 and U.S. 400. Loose outdoor items could become airborne, and minor power disruptions are possible in rural areas.

Residents are urged to secure trash bins, delay non-essential travel during peak gust periods, and keep both hands on the wheel while driving.

Winds will gradually ease after sunset Sunday, but breezy conditions may linger into early Monday as cooler air settles across the state. Additional advisories could be issued if gusts trend higher.
