Dodge City, Kansas – Widespread rain is expected across southwest Kansas Friday night through Saturday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Dodge City, confidence has increased that rainfall totals between one-quarter and one-half inch will be common across the region. Coverage and amounts are expected to be highest near the Oklahoma border, with lesser totals north of Kansas Highway 96.
Forecasters indicate probabilities for measurable rain range from 60 to 90 percent across much of southwest Kansas, including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal and surrounding communities. Rain is forecast to begin Friday night and continue into Saturday, with steady precipitation possible at times.
Areas along US Highway 83, US Highway 54 and US Highway 283 — especially closer to the Oklahoma state line — may see the highest totals approaching one-half inch. Locations north of K-96, including Hays and surrounding areas, are expected to receive lighter amounts.
The agency also noted that while February precipitation often includes mixed wintry weather, this system is expected to produce all rain, with temperatures remaining above freezing.
Drivers traveling Friday night and Saturday should prepare for wet roadways and reduced visibility during periods of steady rain. While widespread flooding is not forecast, ponding on road surfaces may occur in low-lying or poor-drainage areas.
The timing may be especially relevant for weekend travelers, students and workers commuting along major highways across southwest Kansas.
No flood advisories were in effect as of Wednesday afternoon.
