Dodge City, Kansas — A Winter Storm Watch is in effect as a developing storm system is expected to bring accumulating snow and travel impacts to southwest Kansas beginning Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, periods of snow—potentially moderate to heavy at times—are forecast from Friday through Saturday. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are possible across the Dodge City area, with higher amounts expected farther south toward the Oklahoma state line by early Sunday morning.
Forecasters say snowfall rates could increase at times Friday night into Saturday, leading to rapidly changing road conditions. Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph on Friday may also reduce visibility and cause areas of blowing and drifting snow, especially in open and rural areas.
Major routes including U.S. Highway 50, U.S. 283, and U.S. 56 could see slick and snow-covered conditions, particularly during periods of heavier snowfall. Drivers traveling overnight or early Saturday should be prepared for reduced visibility and slower travel.
The Winter Storm Watch means conditions are favorable for significant winter weather, but exact snowfall amounts and impacts are still being refined. Residents are encouraged to monitor later forecasts and be prepared for possible advisories or warnings as confidence increases.
The National Weather Service advises travelers to allow extra time, carry winter safety supplies, and avoid unnecessary travel if conditions worsen. Livestock operators and those with outdoor plans should also prepare for prolonged cold and snow-covered ground.
For commuters, students, and weekend travelers, the most impactful period is expected from Friday evening through Saturday, when snowfall and blowing snow may combine to create hazardous travel conditions across southwest Kansas.
