Dodge City, Kansas – Snowfall reports collected through late Friday show much of the Dodge City region received between 6 and 9 inches of snow during the Jan. 9 winter storm, creating widespread travel and cleanup impacts across southwest Kansas.
According to a snowfall plot shared by the National Weather Service office in Dodge City, totals were compiled from public reports submitted via social media and other observation sources. The agency said the data helped illustrate where the storm’s heaviest impacts occurred.
Within Ford County and surrounding areas, multiple reports clustered in the 6- to 8-inch range, with isolated higher totals approaching 9 inches. Communities west and southwest of Dodge City showed some of the most consistent accumulations, while areas farther east generally reported lower totals ranging from 2 to 4 inches.
The snowfall plot, timestamped 11:21 PM CST, reflects reports gathered throughout Friday evening as snow tapered off across the region. National Weather Service officials thanked residents for contributing measurements, noting that real-time public reports improve storm accuracy and post-event analysis.
Road conditions across Dodge City and nearby highways were affected during and after the storm, particularly during evening hours. Snow-covered secondary roads and reduced visibility were reported in several locations, though conditions gradually improved as snowfall ended.
For commuters, students, and weekend travelers, the storm’s totals meant slower travel times and ongoing snow removal into Saturday. Officials reminded residents to continue using caution on untreated roads and allow extra time for travel.
The Dodge City National Weather Service office emphasized that snowfall totals can vary significantly over short distances and encouraged continued reporting during future events to support community-wide situational awareness.
