Dodge City, Kansas – Very strong northwest winds are expected to develop across Dodge City and much of western Kansas on Friday, prompting a High Wind Watch, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

Forecasters say winds will strengthen rapidly behind an intense storm system moving across the central Plains. Although no precipitation is expected with this system, the pressure gradient behind the front will generate dangerously strong winds across the region.

Wind gusts are forecast to reach 45 to 55 miles per hour across much of western Kansas, with gusts as high as 60 mph possible, particularly in west-central portions of the state. In Dodge City, peak gusts are expected to fall in the 40 to 45 mph range, with higher gusts possible nearby.

The High Wind Watch is in effect from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, covering Dodge City and surrounding counties. Sustained northwest winds combined with powerful gusts may make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as semis, campers, and vehicles towing trailers.

The National Weather Service warns that loose objects may be blown around, and isolated power disruptions are possible if tree limbs or utility lines are affected. Blowing dust may also reduce visibility at times, particularly in open rural areas and along east–west roadways.

Winds are expected to gradually weaken Friday evening as the storm system moves farther east and pressure differences ease.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel in high-profile vehicles during peak wind hours, and remain alert for sudden gusts.

Drivers, outdoor workers, and agricultural operations in the Dodge City area should prepare for potentially hazardous wind conditions throughout Friday.
