Dodge City, Kan. – Heavy rainfall is set to soak southwest Kansas beginning late this weekend, raising the risk of flooding across several counties as storms linger into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, widespread totals of two inches or more are possible, with the highest chances centered on Dodge City at 65 percent, Pratt at 55 percent, and Liberal at 50 percent. Garden City and Hays face lower but still notable risks. The heaviest rainfall is expected from Sunday night through Monday morning.
Flooding could become a concern in low-lying and urban areas, particularly across south-central and southwest Kansas. Travel may be hazardous on highways including U.S. 50 and U.S. 283 if water overtops roadways. Emergency managers are urging residents to avoid driving through flooded streets and to keep phones and devices charged in case of power outages.
While severe thunderstorms are not expected to be widespread, isolated stronger storms cannot be ruled out. Once the system clears, much cooler air will settle into the region by midweek, offering relief from summer heat.
Warnings remain possible as rainfall totals develop, and residents should monitor local alerts through Tuesday.
