Dodge City, Kan. – Western Kansas will see its stretch of mild September weather fade quickly, with summer-like heat returning early next week. Afternoon highs will climb back into the upper 80s, with some cities pushing 90 degrees by Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the warming trend will build after a cooler weekend, when highs linger in the 70s across much of the region. By Monday, places like Garden City, Liberal, and Hays will reach the mid-80s, while Dodge City is expected to top out near 87 by Tuesday afternoon.

The change comes as dry southwest winds develop, pushing temperatures above normal for early September. Drivers and outdoor workers should take precautions against heat stress, especially with midday readings near 90 expected to continue through Thursday.

In Garden City and Pratt, highs could reach 88 to 89 degrees, while Hays and Wakeeney will approach 86 to 87. Overnight lows, however, will stay mild in the 60s, offering some relief during the evenings.

The National Weather Service says the heat will hold through at least Thursday, with little chance of significant rain. Updates are expected as the warming trend continues.
