Dodge City, Kan. – Southwest Kansas faces a heightened severe weather threat late Wednesday, with storms expected to develop between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. that could produce damaging winds, large hail, and heavy downpours.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Level 2 risk for severe storms has been issued across much of central and western Kansas. The greatest threats include wind gusts topping 60 mph and hail large enough to dent vehicles or damage crops. Communities from Garden City to Pratt, including Dodge City, could see the strongest activity late in the day.
Travel may be hazardous during the evening commute, particularly along U.S. Highway 50 and U.S. Highway 283 where visibility could drop in heavy rain. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and have a safe shelter option if warnings are issued.
The storm risk should diminish after sunset as temperatures cool, but unsettled weather could return late Thursday night into the weekend with additional chances for showers.
