Dodge City, Kansas – Drivers across southwest Kansas should prepare for dangerous travel conditions Friday as a powerful cold front ushers in strong northwest winds capable of making driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the cold front is expected to move through Thursday night, with winds rapidly increasing by Friday morning. Sustained northwest winds near 30 mph are expected by midday Friday, with peak gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph during the late morning and early afternoon hours. The strongest winds are forecast to favor northwest Kansas counties, including areas northwest of Dodge City.
Travel impacts are most likely along US-83, US-50, and US-283, where sudden gusts could make steering difficult, particularly for semi-trucks, RVs, and vehicles pulling trailers. Blowing dust is also possible in open agricultural areas, which could briefly reduce visibility and create sudden hazards on rural roadways.
Garden City, Scott City, and surrounding communities may see similar conditions as winds peak during the busiest daytime travel hours. Loose outdoor objects could be blown into roadways, adding to travel risks.
Winds are expected to gradually ease Friday evening, but motorists are urged to use caution during the day and consider delaying travel if driving high-profile vehicles. Wind advisories or high wind warnings may be issued as the event draws closer.
