Dodge City, Kan. – A Flood Watch goes into effect at 10 p.m. Sunday for much of central and southwest Kansas, with heavy rain likely to cause dangerous travel conditions overnight into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, one to three inches of rain has already fallen across the region, and additional rainfall could push creeks and rivers out of their banks. Counties under the watch include Ford, Pratt, Barber, Pawnee, Edwards, Stafford, Comanche, Kiowa, Hodgeman, Ness, Lane and Rush.
Low-lying areas in Dodge City, Pratt and Medicine Lodge could see extensive street flooding if storms continue to train over the same locations. The NWS warns that flooding could be widespread enough to impact local highways, particularly U.S. 50, U.S. 283, and state routes connecting smaller towns.
Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads overnight and have alternate routes ready in case closures occur. Residents should keep phones charged in case power outages develop, and those in flood-prone areas should be prepared to move to higher ground quickly if warnings are issued.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday morning, with updates and possible Flood Warnings expected if conditions worsen.
