Dodge City, Kansas – Drivers across southwest Kansas could encounter sudden drops in visibility early Monday as patchy fog develops overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions for the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, areas along and east of Highway 283 face the highest risk for fog between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Visibility could fall below one mile at times, particularly near Dodge City, Great Bend, Hays, and surrounding rural roadways. Forecasters warn that conditions may change quickly, especially in low-lying areas and open stretches of highway.
The fog is expected to be unevenly distributed, meaning some drivers may encounter clear roads before suddenly entering dense fog banks. Portions of U.S. 50, U.S. 56, and nearby county roads could see brief but significant visibility reductions during the early morning hours.
Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights rather than high beams, which can worsen visibility in fog. Extra caution is advised for school bus routes and agricultural traffic common in the region during early hours.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after mid-morning as fog lifts and daylight increases. No additional weather hazards are anticipated later Monday, but officials note that further statements could be issued if fog becomes more widespread than expected.
