Dodge City, Kansas – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire this afternoon as powerful wind gusts and extremely dry air combine across southwest Kansas, creating conditions capable of rapid fire spread within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. across southwest Kansas and parts of south-central Kansas. Relative humidity has dropped as low as 8% to 11%, while south to southwest winds are gusting between 25 and 35 mph, especially near Dodge City, Garden City, and Liberal.
Counties along US-50, US-83, and US-283 face the highest risk, where dry grasses can ignite fires and spread quickly under sustained winds. Areas including Hays, Pratt, and Medicine Lodge are also seeing elevated fire conditions, though slightly higher humidity may limit extreme spread.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and delay equipment use that could produce sparks. Even a small ignition source could threaten property and force road closures in rural areas.
Critical fire risk remains in place through this evening, with additional warnings possible if winds remain strong into the overnight hours.
