Dodge City, KS – A strong cold front sweeping across western Kansas this morning is bringing gusty northwesterly winds and very dry air, creating an elevated fire danger across much of the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Dodge City.

Wind gusts are expected to increase to 35–40 mph by late morning, with sustained winds between 25 and 30 mph. Relative humidity levels will fall to 20–25%, heightening the risk for rapid fire spread, especially in open grassland areas.

“This combination of strong winds and low humidity can cause erratic fire behavior,” the NWS said, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and to monitor any existing fires closely.

The advisory comes as pheasant hunting season opens across Kansas, prompting additional caution for those in the field. Hunters are advised to secure equipment, avoid sparks from vehicles or firearms, and remain aware of wind direction at all times.

Conditions will remain dry and breezy through the afternoon before slowly improving this evening.
