Dodge City, Kansas – Strong thunderstorms could erupt across western and central Kansas Tuesday afternoon as a cold front pushes into the region, bringing a threat of large hail and damaging winds during peak travel hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. Tuesday, especially from Garden City through Dodge City and up to Hays. Areas along and east of U.S. Highway 283 face the highest risk for severe weather. Wind gusts may reach 60 to 70 mph, with hailstones as large as one inch in diameter possible in some storms.

Cities including Liberal, Ulysses, and Great Bend should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. While the potential for extreme weather—such as 2-inch hail or winds over 70 mph—remains low, residents are urged to stay alert for updates.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel during storms, secure outdoor items, and ensure mobile devices are charged in case of outages. This setup is typical of June patterns, when clashing air masses often lead to afternoon convection.

Severe thunderstorm risks continue into Tuesday evening. Additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
