Washington, DC – Residents across the DC–Maryland–Virginia region could face renewed winter travel disruptions as a late-January weather pattern increases the potential for accumulating snow across the Mid-Atlantic.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the DMV region is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling a higher likelihood of at least one organized winter system impacting the area. The risk covers the District, central Maryland, and northern Virginia.

In the District and nearby Northern Virginia communities such as Alexandria and Arlington, colder-than-normal temperatures are expected to hold in place, increasing confidence that precipitation falls mainly as snow. That raises concerns for slick conditions along Interstate 395, the Capital Beltway, and key commuter routes during heavier snowfall.

Across central Maryland, including Baltimore and surrounding counties, snow could arrive in multiple rounds rather than a single storm. That pattern may lead to cumulative impacts on untreated roads, MARC rail service, and daily commutes along Interstate 95.

Maryland and Virginia transportation officials urge residents to monitor conditions closely, limit non-essential travel during snow, and prepare vehicles with winter safety supplies. With below-normal temperatures favored across the region, any snow that falls may linger between systems.

More detailed guidance and potential winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with clearer timing and impacts becoming available by early next week.
