Baltimore, MD – Another frigid night is ahead for the DMV as dangerous wind chills plunge below zero across much of the region, prompting Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings, especially in higher elevations and mountain communities.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, wind chills overnight into Wednesday morning are expected to range from -10° to -20° in parts of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and northern Virginia. The coldest conditions are forecast near the Allegheny Mountains, including areas along I-68 near Cumberland, I-81 near Hagerstown and Winchester, and stretches of I-70 west of Frederick.

Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes with exposed skin under these conditions. Hypothermia is also a serious risk for anyone spending extended time outdoors, including drivers dealing with breakdowns, overnight workers, and unhoused individuals.

Cold Weather Advisories extend eastward into the Baltimore and Washington metro areas, including communities near I-95, I-83, and I-66, where wind chills may dip just below zero at times overnight. While temperatures will rise slightly after sunrise, dangerously cold conditions may persist through early Wednesday morning.

Officials urge residents to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Drivers are advised to keep emergency supplies in vehicles, especially when traveling through mountain corridors or rural highways overnight.

Residents are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure pets are brought indoors.
