District of Columbia – Cold air settles over the region this morning as bare trees rattle lightly in the breeze. Sidewalks feel dry now, but that calm won’t last. A quick winter turn is lining up, and timing will matter for commuters.

According to the National Weather Service, sunshine dominates early today with highs near 51. Clouds increase later, followed by light rain developing tonight into Wednesday. Temperatures stay mild at first, keeping roads wet rather than icy through much of Wednesday afternoon.

Across the Mid-Atlantic, colder air pushes in Wednesday night. Rain changes to a rain-and-snow mix, then light snow in spots as temperatures fall toward freezing. Accumulation looks limited, but the setup favors slick conditions once colder air settles in.

In Washington, D.C., rain becomes more widespread Wednesday, then tapers late as colder air arrives. By early Thursday, spotty snow showers are possible before skies partially clear. Highs Thursday struggle to reach the low 30s, with gusty northwest winds adding bite.

Travel impacts increase during the Wednesday night and early Thursday window. Bridges, ramps, and untreated roads along I-395, I-295, the George Washington Parkway, and local streets may develop black ice. Any leftover moisture can freeze quickly. Plan extra time and reduce speed during early commutes.

Friday brings quieter but cold conditions. Sunshine returns, though highs remain in the mid-30s. Saturday moderates slightly with more sun, but winter stays firmly in control across the region.

Additional advisories may be issued if snow coverage increases. Heading out late Wednesday or early Thursday? Let us know what road conditions look like where you are.
