Distracted Driving Leads to Severe Vehicle-Buggy Collision in Middlebury

Middlebury, IN – A Goshen man remains hospitalized in critical condition following a crash involving his horse-drawn buggy and a Chevrolet Cruze. The accident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, on County Road 28, east of County Road 133.

Police reports state the 22-year-old Middlebury man, who drove the Chevrolet eastbound, collided with the buggy operated by the 27-year-old Goshen resident. The car sustained extensive front-end damage, while the buggy suffered rear-end and right-side damage due to the impact.

According to the report, the driver admitted he was distracted by his phone and did not notice the buggy in front of him. He struck the buggy from behind, ejecting the Goshen man from his seat. The buggy driver suffered severe head and facial injuries and lost consciousness temporarily.

Emergency responders transported him to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he received treatment for life-threatening injuries. The Middlebury driver was cited for distracted driving, underscoring the dangers of using a phone behind the wheel. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, emphasizing road safety, particularly in areas with high buggy traffic.
