BARTLETT, Ill. – A heart-wrenching collision between a Honda Civic carrying South Elgin High School students and a semi-tractor trailer has left two young lives tragically cut short.

According to police reports the crash Thursday around 7:00 a.m., at the crossroads of IL Route 25 and Keynon Road, prompting an urgent response from Bartlett Police Department and the South Elgin Fire Protection District.

Details of the crash revealed a grim reality: the 2002 Honda Civic, occupied by four South Elgin High School students, was no match for the impact from the 2007 Mack semi-tractor trailer. As emergency crews arrived on the scene, they found the wreckage and the devastating aftermath.

Among those affected, a female passenger in the Honda Civic suffered life-threatening injuries. Despite swift medical intervention and transportation to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries, marking one of the tragic losses that this accident has yielded. Another young life was claimed at the scene, a female passenger who was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The driver of the semi-tractor trailer, a male, and the female driver of the Honda Civic both survived the collision with non-life-threatening injuries. They were rushed to medical facilities for treatment and evaluation. The gravity of the situation prompted School District U-46 to mobilize its Crisis Team at South Elgin High School. This dedicated team aims to provide much-needed support to grieving students, staff, and families during this profoundly challenging period.

To uncover the facts and circumstances surrounding the crash, the Bartlett Police Department is collaborating with the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT). Their combined efforts will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in comprehending the events leading up to this tragedy.

The School District’s poignant statement captures the collective sentiment of sorrow that hangs heavy in the air: “Our thoughts, prayers, and most sincere condolences are with the families and loved ones of the students during this incredibly difficult time.”
