A devastating winter storm is expected to impact Richmond and much of central Virginia from Saturday afternoon through Monday, with the most dangerous conditions occurring Sunday into Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Snow will begin Saturday evening before transitioning to sleet and freezing rain, as temperatures remain locked in the 20s. Ice accumulations of one-half to three-quarters of an inch are expected across the Richmond metro and along the I-95 corridor, levels capable of causing significant tree damage and widespread power outages.

Travel conditions are expected to rapidly become extremely dangerous to nearly impossible, especially Sunday, as ice coats roads on top of existing snow and sleet. Officials strongly urge residents to avoid all travel during the storm.

While precipitation may taper late Sunday night, conditions may worsen on Monday as northwest winds increase to 20–30 mph. These winds, acting on ice-laden trees and power lines, could cause additional outages and damage even after the storm ends. Some outages may last multiple days due to the severity of ice buildup.

Residents should complete preparations immediately, charge devices, secure backup heat, and be ready for prolonged disruptions. Once the storm begins, it will be too late to safely prepare.
