Detroit, Michigan – Wildfire smoke drifting across Michigan has triggered a statewide Air Quality Advisory, keeping thousands indoors through midnight as officials warn of unhealthy air, especially for children, seniors, and those with heart or lung conditions. The haze has settled over major cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Flint, making outdoor activity risky and prompting health alerts.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke is pushing air pollution into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category, with even higher, localized “Unhealthy” readings possible. All Michigan counties are under this advisory until midnight tonight, and health officials urge residents to limit strenuous activity outside, especially if they experience coughing, chest tightness, or irritated eyes.

Impacts are being felt along I-94 and I-75, where visibility may be reduced and outdoor workers are most at risk. Schools and daycares are keeping children inside during recess, and hospitals report increased calls about breathing issues. Residents are advised to keep windows shut, use air conditioning if possible, and run air purifiers with high-efficiency filters.

The advisory remains in effect until at least midnight, with officials monitoring smoke movement and warning that additional alerts may follow if conditions persist.
