Detroit, MI – Drivers across southeast Michigan could face a slippery and windy stretch late tonight into Friday morning as rain changes to snow, temperatures drop quickly, and gusty winds sweep through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, southerly winds will strengthen through today with gusts around 40 mph expected this evening before shifting west overnight. As colder air moves in, any lingering moisture on roads could flash freeze late tonight as temperatures fall into the 20s. Scattered light snow showers are also expected overnight into Friday morning, with a dusting to near an inch possible in heavier bursts.
The Friday morning commute may be impacted across Detroit, Hamtramck, Dearborn, and along major corridors including I-75, I-94, and I-96. Isolated snow squalls could briefly reduce visibility, while gusty winds continue to blow around untreated snow and slick spots. Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time and watch for rapidly changing conditions.
Winds remain breezy Friday with gusts near 40 mph before gradually easing later in the day. Snow showers taper off by midday, and conditions improve Friday night. The weekend stays quieter but colder, with highs mainly in the 30s.
Looking ahead, the pattern moderates early next week. Christmas Eve on Wednesday is currently trending mostly cloudy but calmer, with milder temperatures returning across southeast Michigan, offering improved conditions for holiday travel and last-minute plans. While wind and snow impacts linger into Friday, no additional hazardous weather is expected beyond that period, though updates may be issued if snow squalls become more widespread.
