Detroit, Michigan – Drivers across southeast Michigan could encounter dangerous crosswinds beginning around 5 a.m. Friday, as a powerful surge of wind pushes across the region with gusts capable of reaching 55 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a High Wind Watch remains in effect from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for all of southeast Michigan. Southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph will strengthen through the morning before gradually shifting northwest later in the day.

Cities including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Pontiac, Port Huron, and Monroe sit inside the watch area. Forecasters warn the strongest gusts could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, particularly along major highways such as Interstate 75, Interstate 94, and Interstate 96.

Wind impacts could extend beyond travel. Utility officials warn scattered to widespread power outages are possible if strong gusts bring down tree limbs or power lines. Downed trees and debris may also create localized road hazards.

The most intense winds are expected during the late morning through afternoon hours Friday, when the pressure gradient tightens across the region.

Residents should secure outdoor objects such as patio furniture, trash bins, and decorations before winds increase. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if wind speeds trend higher as the system approaches.
