Pontiac, Michigan – Southeast Michigan residents should brace for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat occurring between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph or greater and heavy rainfall are the primary concerns.
According to the US National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac Michigan, a slight to enhanced risk for severe weather is in effect for much of Southeast Michigan. Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are anticipated to sweep through the region. A few tornadoes are also possible, with large hail (1″+) presenting a secondary threat. Rainfall totals could reach 0.75-1.50 inches across the area, with localized totals of 1.5-3+ inches, especially in the Tri-Cities and northern Thumb areas.
Cities like Detroit, Lansing, Flint, and Ann Arbor are all within the enhanced risk zone. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and have a plan for seeking shelter. Travel conditions may rapidly deteriorate during the evening commute due to heavy rain and strong winds. Localized flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying areas and urban centers.
