Detroit, MI – Widespread freezing rain and a wintry mix are expected to impact much of southeast Michigan on Friday, creating hazardous travel conditions and minor to moderate disruptions.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the greatest impact window is expected between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, when freezing rain is most likely. Ice accumulation during this period may lead to slippery roads and the potential for localized power outages across the region.
Forecast graphics highlight freezing rain as the primary hazard, with a broader wintry mix possible before and after the peak impact window. The National Weather Service categorizes expected impacts as minor to moderate, consistent with the Winter Storm Severity Index outlook for southeast Michigan.
In addition to freezing rain, forecasters noted that around an inch of snow and sleet is possible across the northern Thumb, which could further complicate travel in those areas.
The timing graphic shows freezing rain chances increasing overnight Thursday and continuing through Friday morning and afternoon, before diminishing by Friday night as conditions improve.
Residents and commuters are urged to use caution during the Friday commute, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
