Michigan – Rain is already falling across the Detroit area this afternoon, and conditions are expected to turn more volatile as storms begin to strengthen. Wet roads and gusty winds are early signs of a developing severe weather pattern.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a marginal risk of severe weather is in place today with the potential for large hail as storms move northeast around 35 mph. The threat increases into Tuesday, when a slight risk of severe storms includes damaging winds, hail, and even isolated tornado potential.

Across Detroit, Dearborn, and surrounding Metro areas, drivers along I-94, I-75, and I-696 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Heavy downpours may reduce visibility, while gusty winds could make travel difficult, especially on bridges and open roadways. Plan extra time during peak travel hours.

By Tuesday afternoon, storms are expected to become more organized. Stronger cells could produce large hail and damaging wind gusts, with storm motion increasing to around 45 mph. Conditions may deteriorate quickly during the late-day commute.

Midweek remains unsettled, with showers and thunderstorms continuing Wednesday and Thursday. Rainfall could become more consistent, leading to ponding on roads and slower travel across the region.

Tuesday: High 78°F, thunderstorms likely
