Winter’s bite tightens across southeast Michigan this week as Arctic air surges in, keeping highs near freezing and pushing wind chills close to 0°F by midweek. It’s a bitter reminder that December’s cold grip has fully arrived, and another round of light snow showers is on the way.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, scattered morning flurries today will fade by midday, leaving behind highs around 28–32°F. Temperatures tumble again tonight into the teens, with skies turning partly cloudy before the next system approaches Wednesday.
By Wednesday afternoon and evening, snow showers redevelop — a quick burst of flakes capable of reducing visibility and dusting roadways during the commute. Behind that system, the coldest air of the season plunges into Michigan. Thursday’s highs will struggle to reach the upper teens, while wind chills from -5°F to 5°F sweep across Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Flint through Friday morning.
Meteorologists say this Arctic blast will linger, with Friday and Saturday both featuring highs in the 20s and occasional snow chances. While accumulation should stay light (under 1 inch each day), slick roads and black ice may persist, especially during morning and evening commutes.
Drivers should bundle up and slow down, especially during midweek travel. The combination of gusty winds and bitter cold will make it feel significantly colder than actual temperatures, posing risks for those outdoors without proper protection.
Looking ahead, forecasters expect temperatures to moderate slightly next week, but another quick-moving system could bring fresh snow chances by Sunday night.
