Detroit, MI – Widespread rain is expected across southeast Michigan on Sunday as mild air and deep moisture move into the region, bringing soaking rainfall and reduced travel visibility.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, rain will spread across the area Sunday morning and become more widespread Sunday afternoon and evening. Preliminary forecasts indicate rainfall totals of 1 to 1.5 inches across much of southeast Michigan, including the Detroit metro area, with locally higher amounts possible.
Forecasters note that temperatures will remain mild during the event, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 50s Sunday evening before a cold front passes overnight. Because temperatures remain above freezing, precipitation is expected to fall entirely as rain.
The heaviest rainfall is expected Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, when periods of steady rain could lead to ponding on roads, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Motorists should be prepared for slick conditions and reduced visibility, particularly during evening travel hours.
The National Weather Service also indicated a slight chance of thunderstorms Sunday evening, though severe weather is not expected at this time. Patchy dense fog may develop late Sunday night into Monday morning as moisture lingers behind the rain.
A much colder air mass is forecast to arrive Monday morning, marking a sharp change from the mild weekend conditions. While no flooding is anticipated, residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and be alert for changing road conditions.
Commuters, delivery drivers, and weekend travelers should allow extra time and use caution during periods of heavier rain Sunday afternoon and night.
Additional updates will be issued as the timing and rainfall totals become more refined
