Detroit, Michigan – Bitter cold conditions will intensify across southeast Michigan tonight as wind chills fall as low as -15 to -20 degrees, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory for the Detroit area, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory is in effect through 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the coldest conditions expected between 9 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday. Forecasters say the lowest wind chills will occur near the Ohio state line, while cloud cover from Lake Michigan may keep wind chills slightly higher, generally above -10 degrees, across Midland and northern Bay counties.

Overnight air temperatures will drop into the single digits, while northwest winds will continue to produce dangerously low apparent temperatures. Officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions.

Despite daytime highs gradually improving Tuesday, below-normal temperatures will persist, and cold impacts may linger through the morning commute. Drivers should also be alert for slick spots on untreated roads as lingering ice remains in place.

Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers, limit time outdoors, and bring pets indoors overnight. Extra caution is advised for those working outside or traveling late tonight or early Tuesday.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that this prolonged stretch of cold remains hazardous, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.
