Detroit, Michigan – Gusty winds and scattered lake-effect snow showers are moving across southeast Michigan today, keeping temperatures locked below freezing and setting up a stretch of seasonably cold weather that lasts through late week.

This afternoon, highs across the Detroit metro are holding between 28 and 31 degrees as brisk northwest winds kick up occasional snow showers. Accumulations are expected to be minor, generally under an inch, but slick spots may develop on untreated roads and bridges this evening. According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the gusty winds will gradually ease overnight, though flurries may linger in spots.

Tuesday and Wednesday bring additional chances for light snow, with most areas again picking up an inch or less with each passing system. Morning lows Tuesday are expected to fall into the 17 to 21 degree range, with afternoon highs recovering only into the mid to upper 20s. Wednesday follows a similar pattern, with lows between 18 and 22 degrees and highs near 30.

The bigger story will be the cold. Daytime wind chills will remain in the teens much of the week, while nighttime wind chills dip toward the single digits, and in some outlying areas near zero. According to the National Weather Service, this pattern reflects typical late-December conditions, but prolonged exposure outdoors could still be dangerous.

Looking ahead to New Year’s Day, colder air deepens further. Morning lows are expected to drop into the upper single digits to low teens, with highs struggling to reach the lower 20s. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors during the coldest periods, and prepare vehicles for winter driving despite generally light snowfall.
