Detroit, MI – Michiganders could catch another glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight as a powerful solar storm continues to produce auroras visible far beyond their normal range. The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac reports generally partly clear skies across southeast Michigan, offering a window for viewing the aurora early this evening before thin clouds develop overnight.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, a G3–G4-level geomagnetic storm remains in effect following multiple solar eruptions that have supercharged Earth’s magnetic field. That same storm created spectacular aurora displays from Texas to Maine Tuesday night — and conditions tonight remain strong enough for a repeat across parts of Michigan.

Forecasters say the best chance for viewing will be between 8 p.m. and midnight, particularly in northern and rural parts of southeast Michigan, such as Lapeer, Livingston, and Sanilac Counties. Look north and away from city lights for the best visibility.

Today’s forecast calls for highs near 45°F with gusty northwest winds up to 30 mph in the Thumb region, tapering off after sunset. Temperatures will warm steadily through Friday and Saturday, reaching the upper 50s to low 60s before a front cools things again early next week.

If skies remain clear long enough, tonight could bring another chance for Michigan residents to see the Aurora Borealis — a rare sight this far south.
