Detroit, Michigan – Winter weather alerts are in effect across southeast Michigan as light snow, gusty winds, and sharply colder temperatures are expected to impact travel from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, occasional light snow will continue Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, with total accumulations of 1 to 2 inches possible across much of the region. Snowfall is expected to increase during the afternoon and evening hours, potentially affecting road conditions along Interstate 75, Interstate 94, Interstate 96, and US-23.
On Friday, continued light snow showers are expected as temperatures rise into the lower 30s. Conditions are forecast to deteriorate late Friday afternoon and evening as a strong cold front moves through southeast Michigan. Forecasters warn that snow squalls are possible late Friday, accompanied by northwest wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, which may cause sudden reductions in visibility and localized blowing and drifting snow.
Behind the front, temperatures are expected to plummet rapidly Friday evening, falling from near or just above freezing into the single digits overnight. Wind chills are forecast to drop to around 15 degrees below zero by early Saturday morning, creating a heightened risk of frostbite on exposed skin.
Saturday is expected to be partly sunny but bitterly cold, with highs only reaching the 10 to 17 degree range. Wind chills will remain hazardous during the morning hours before gradually improving later in the day. Light snow showers may return Sunday, though temperatures are expected to moderate slightly.
Drivers are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, especially during the Friday evening commute and overnight travel period. This weather pattern may pose added challenges for commuters, overnight workers, and early-morning travelers.
