Detroit, MI – A strong cold front will sweep through southeast Michigan beginning Wednesday morning, bringing a mix of gusty winds, lake effect snow, and falling temperatures that could impact Thanksgiving travel plans, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac.

Forecasters expect westerly wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph developing early Wednesday, with gusty conditions lingering through Thanksgiving Day. Temperatures will drop from the upper 40s into the mid-30s by Wednesday afternoon, falling below freezing by night. Wind chills could dip into the teens by Thanksgiving morning.

The NWS also warns of lake effect snow showers expanding Wednesday night into Thursday, producing variable accumulations ranging from a dusting to 2 inches, especially near the I-94 corridor. Rapid changes in visibility and slippery roads are likely, particularly during overnight and early morning travel hours.

Officials urge drivers to allow extra time for travel, secure outdoor items, and prepare for sudden weather changes through the holiday.
