Detroit, Michigan – Light to briefly moderate freezing rain is expected to impact the Detroit area this morning, with ice accumulations between 0.10 and 0.25 inches possible before conditions improve later in the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Friday. The peak period for freezing rain is expected between 8 a.m. and noon, when surface temperatures remain below freezing and allow ice to build on untreated roads and elevated surfaces.

Forecast graphics show the highest ice totals centered across southeast Michigan, including the Detroit metro area, where even thin ice accretions could make travel hazardous. The Weather Service warns that roads may appear wet but be icy, increasing the risk of accidents, especially during the morning commute.

Sidewalks, driveways, and stairs are also expected to become slippery as freezing rain continues. Officials urge residents to use caution when walking outdoors and to be alert during the first few steps outside.

Temperatures are forecast to slowly rise above freezing this afternoon, allowing freezing rain to transition to plain rain or drizzle. While this change should gradually reduce icing potential, lingering slick spots may persist into the early afternoon, particularly on bridges and shaded roadways.

The Weather Service also notes that scattered power outages are possible if ice accumulations approach one-quarter inch, as ice loading can stress tree limbs and overhead lines. However, widespread outages are not currently expected.

Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve. Residents should continue to check the latest road conditions and weather updates throughout the day.
