Detroit, Michigan – Bitterly cold conditions continue across southeast Michigan this morning as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday, with dangerously low wind chill values impacting much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, wind chill readings early Friday dropped to around 20 degrees below zero across parts of the Tri-Cities and the northern Thumb, while areas farther south toward the M-59 corridor experienced wind chills closer to 15 degrees below zero. These values represent the coldest conditions of the current stretch of Arctic air.

Forecasters say the most hazardous cold occurred during the overnight and early morning hours, with wind chills expected to slowly improve later this morning as winds ease and temperatures rise slightly. Even so, very cold conditions will persist into the weekend, with additional mornings seeing wind chills well below zero.

Travelers and commuters along Interstate 94, Interstate 75, Interstate 96, U.S. Route 24, and M-59 are urged to prepare for extreme cold exposure, particularly in the event of vehicle trouble or delays. While widespread snowfall is not expected this morning, the cold alone poses a serious safety concern.

The National Weather Service urges residents to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under current wind chill values. Pets should be brought indoors, and residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heating.

Homeowners are also advised to protect plumbing by insulating exposed pipes and allowing faucets to drip during the coldest hours. Safe use of heating equipment is critical, with officials warning against the indoor use of grills, generators, or unapproved heating sources.

While wind chills may briefly improve this afternoon, cold weather is expected to continue through the weekend, with additional advisory-level conditions possible. Commuters, students, and early-morning workers across southeast Michigan should continue monitoring forecast updates and take precautions during this prolonged period of dangerous cold.
