Detroit, MI – A potent Fall snowstorm is set to sweep into southeast Michigan Saturday afternoon, bringing fast-building totals and hazardous travel from Oakland County to the Lake Erie shore through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 3 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday for Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, and Monroe counties. Widespread totals of 5 to 7 inches are likely. Light snow begins between 1 and 4 p.m., then intensifies after 6 p.m. when hourly rates could exceed an inch, especially along I-75 from Pontiac to downtown Detroit and along I-94 toward Port Huron.
According to MDOT, plow crews will pre-treat major corridors but warn that evening snowfall may overwhelm early passes. Slick conditions are expected on the Lodge Freeway, Southfield Road, and the I-275 corridor. Drivers should slow down, extend following distances, and avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest bands. The Michigan Drive Map will provide updated road and crash information Saturday evening.
According to emergency management officials in Wayne and Macomb counties, rapid evening accumulation may impact shift changes at hospitals and manufacturing plants. Residents should charge devices, keep flashlights ready, and clear storm drains before the snow starts. Sidewalks, decks, and driveways are expected to glaze as temperatures fall into the upper 20s overnight.
According to school and municipal officials across Genesee and Lapeer counties, community events scheduled for Saturday evening may face delays if heavier bands persist through midnight. Snow will gradually diminish after daybreak Sunday, but untreated roads could remain slick through the late morning.
