Detroit, MI – The first true taste of December winter greets southeast Michigan this morning as light snow builds across the region, turning roads damp and slick. Snowfall totals between 1 and 2 inches are expected through early Tuesday, mainly from metro Detroit south into Monroe County, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac.

Snow is already developing over portions of Wayne and Oakland Counties and will intensify by late afternoon, with visibility briefly dropping below a mile in heavier bursts. Travel along I-75, I-94, and M-10 could slow during the evening commute as slushy accumulation develops on bridges and untreated surfaces.

By early Tuesday, the snow will taper from west to east as skies gradually clear. Roads may refreeze overnight with lows near 23°F, raising the potential for black ice during early morning travel. Tuesday afternoon brings a partly sunny but cold stretch, with highs holding near 32°F before a brief midweek reprieve.

Wednesday may bring another round of light snow, especially north of the city, though accumulation should remain minor. Temperatures will stay below freezing through Friday, marking the region’s first sustained winter chill of the season.

Residents are urged to use caution during the evening commute, clear windshields fully, and allow extra stopping distance. The first snow of December may be light — but it’s enough to create early-season travel headaches.
