Detroit, Michigan — Accumulating snow is creating hazardous driving conditions across southeast Michigan as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, widespread snow is expected to impact the Wednesday morning commute, with most areas receiving between 1 and 3 inches of accumulation. Higher totals remain possible along the M-59 corridor, where bands of steadier snow may persist longer.

Forecasters say peak snowfall rates are expected between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., a window that coincides with the busiest travel period of the day. During that time, roadways may quickly become snow-covered, and visibility could be reduced during heavier bursts.

Major routes including I-94, I-75, and U.S. 23 are likely to see slowdowns as crews work to clear accumulating snow. Untreated secondary roads and ramps may be especially slick, increasing the risk of spin-outs and minor crashes.

The advisory covers much of southeast Michigan, including Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor, Flint, and surrounding communities. While snowfall intensity is expected to decrease late this morning, additional light accumulations remain possible tonight into Thursday morning as another cold front moves through the region.

The National Weather Service also notes that lake-effect snow may redevelop Thursday night, which could bring renewed impacts to localized areas.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distances, and allow extra travel time. Commuters, students, and early-shift workers are encouraged to check road conditions before leaving and be prepared for changing conditions through midday.
