Detroit, MI — Dangerous extreme cold is expected to impact Detroit and Southeast Michigan from Friday through Sunday, with wind chills dropping as low as 20 degrees below zero.

According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office, sub-zero wind chills are forecast to develop Friday morning, continue through Saturday morning, and return again Sunday morning. The coldest period is expected from 4 a.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday, when wind chills across the Detroit metro area could range from -10° to -20°.

Forecasters warn that these conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, along with the potential for hypothermia if precautions are not taken. All of Southeast Michigan, including Detroit, is included in the extreme cold impact area.

The prolonged nature of the cold could also affect travel, outdoor work, and daily activities, particularly during early morning hours. Vehicles may have difficulty starting, and extended exposure outdoors could become dangerous without proper winter protection.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers including hats and gloves, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Officials also recommend checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those without adequate heating.

The National Weather Service emphasized the importance of preparing now for the cold stretch, as conditions may remain hazardous through the weekend.

Detroit residents should continue monitoring forecast updates through Sunday in case additional cold-related advisories or warnings are issued.
