Detroit, MI – The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a Low Water Advisory and extended a Small Craft Advisory for Michigan waters of Lake Erie, warning of dangerous marine conditions through Wednesday night, October 22.
Forecasters say strong southwest to west winds up to 26 knots, with gusts reaching 32 knots, will create waves up to 4 to 5 feet and cause abnormally low water levels across the western basin of Lake Erie—from the Detroit River to North Cape, Michigan.
The Low Water Advisory begins 10 p.m. Tuesday and continues through 11 p.m. Wednesday. Water levels are expected to fall below the critical mark of -1 inch above low water datum as persistent winds push water eastward across the lake.
The NWS cautions that hazardous navigation conditions are likely, particularly for small craft operating in shallow or nearshore areas. Mariners are advised to avoid boating, secure vessels in port, and use extreme caution in shallow channels.
The Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. Thursday, with peak winds expected Wednesday evening. Conditions should begin improving late Wednesday night as winds ease and lake levels slowly recover.
