Deschutes County, Oregon — A Portland man died after a skiing crash on Mt. Bachelor Monday afternoon, prompting an emergency response.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol was notified at 2:22 p.m. Monday, March 9 of an injured skier on the Wanoga Way Ski Trail.

Deputies, Bend Fire & Rescue, and AirLink medical responders were dispatched to assist.

Ski patrol reached the skier first and found the adult male without a pulse and not breathing, authorities said. Crews performed extensive resuscitation efforts alongside Bend Fire medics, but the skier was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m.

The skier was later identified as Nigel Barry Young, 65, of Portland, Oregon, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators said Young had been skiing with three friends who were ahead of him and did not witness the crash.

Authorities reported that Young was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, but deputies believe the injuries sustained in the crash were not survivable.

The crash occurred on the Wanoga Way Ski Trail, located on the east side of Mt. Bachelor off the Cloudchaser Lift. The run is considered an intermediate-level trail.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said it is working with Mt. Bachelor staff to complete the investigation into the fatal crash.

Officials also thanked Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol, Bend Fire & Rescue, and AirLink crews for their response.

For many young workers and students visiting Central Oregon during winter recreation season, Mt. Bachelor remains one of the region’s busiest outdoor destinations.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the crash.
