Bend, Ore. — Deschutes County Search and Rescue teams located and rescued two lost hikers Saturday evening near the Green Lakes Trailhead, prompting a multi-unit response in winter backcountry conditions.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, 9-1-1 received a call around 6 p.m. on Feb. 7, Saturday, reporting two young men, ages 18 and 20, who were unable to find their way back near the Green Lakes Trailhead off Cascade Lakes Highway, south of Mt. Bachelor.

Search and Rescue volunteers were immediately activated and deployed to the area using snowmobiles and snowshoes due to snow-covered terrain. Officials said crews located the hikers, provided warming materials and evaluated their medical condition.

Authorities reported that no major injuries were found. The hikers were safely escorted back to their vehicle later that evening.

The Sheriff’s Office said the incident highlights how quickly conditions can change in Central Oregon’s high-elevation recreation areas, particularly during winter months when daylight is limited and temperatures drop rapidly.

Officials urged hikers and snowshoers to plan routes in advance, check weather forecasts before heading out, dress appropriately for winter conditions, and carry reliable communication devices capable of contacting emergency services.

Deschutes County Search and Rescue credited trained volunteers for the swift response and successful outcome.

The Green Lakes area is a popular destination for hikers, snowshoers and skiers year-round, drawing visitors from Bend and surrounding communities. Winter rescues in the Cascade Lakes region are not uncommon and often require specialized equipment and coordination due to snow depth and remote access.

For students, young adults and seasonal workers new to Central Oregon recreation areas, officials emphasized the importance of preparation before heading into the backcountry.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to encourage residents and visitors to prioritize safety and situational awareness when recreating outdoors in winter conditions.
