Des Moines, Iowa – Severe thunderstorms could sweep across eastern Iowa and western Illinois Saturday night, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain through 7 a.m. Sunday. Cities like Peoria, the Quad Cities, and Des Moines are under a slight risk for severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms are expected to develop after 8 p.m. and continue through early Sunday morning. A Level 2 out of 5 risk has been issued for areas including Peoria and parts of eastern Iowa, where strong winds and hail up to 1 inch in diameter are possible.

The NWS noted uncertainty in where the strongest storm corridors will form, but all hazards are on the table. Locations from Cedar Rapids to Kirksville may experience brief lulls before new storms develop overnight.

Residents should secure outdoor items, stay indoors during storms, and have weather alerts enabled on mobile devices. Localized flooding could occur in low-lying areas due to torrential rainfall.

Storm activity is expected to subside by early Sunday, but additional rounds of rain are possible later in the day. Updates will be issued as needed if storm intensity increases.
