Des Moines, Iowa – Extreme heat is gripping much of Iowa through the weekend, with heat index values reaching between 100°F and 110°F during the afternoon hours. With little cooling after sunset, overnight lows will only fall into the upper 70s, increasing health risks for vulnerable populations.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories remain in effect across central and western Iowa, including Sioux City, Ames, and Council Bluffs. Eastern areas like Cedar Rapids and Dubuque fall under advisories, with dangerous conditions expected through Sunday evening. Thunderstorm chances may return late Sunday into early next week, offering potential relief but also new hazards.
High humidity combined with soaring temperatures will make prolonged outdoor exposure dangerous. Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, hydrate frequently, and check on elderly neighbors. Cooling centers should be utilized, and pet safety should not be overlooked.
This marks one of the hottest stretches of the summer so far. Officials say heat-related illness can escalate quickly, especially without proper cooling overnight.
More updates are expected as thunderstorm timing becomes clearer. Heat alerts may be extended into early next week for parts of eastern Iowa.
