Des Moines, Iowa – Roads across central Iowa could see standing water and hazardous driving conditions tonight as rainfall totals approach 2 inches with storms intensifying overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through the day before increasing in coverage tonight. Rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches are expected, with moderate to heavy bursts likely to cause ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas.

The heaviest rain is expected overnight into early Thursday, impacting travel along major routes including I-35, I-80, and I-235. Reduced visibility and water-covered roads could create dangerous conditions, especially during late-night and early morning travel.

Far southern Iowa faces an added risk of strong to severe storms, with large hail and damaging winds as the primary threats. Areas near Ottumwa and the Missouri border could see the most intense storms.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, monitor alerts, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions tonight. Another round of strong storms is possible by Friday, extending the active weather pattern.
