Des Moines, Iowa – Outdoor plans across central Iowa could become dangerous Monday afternoon as oppressive heat and humidity push heat index values above 100 degrees, prompting a Heat Advisory for millions of residents during the hottest part of the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Monday for much of central Iowa. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s while dew points remain in the 70s, producing peak heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees.
Communities including Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Waterloo, Marshalltown, Carroll, Creston, Ottumwa, Lamoni and surrounding areas will experience the highest heat during the afternoon. Forecast high temperatures range from the mid-90s to upper 90s, with heat index values reaching 109 degrees in Ames, 107 degrees in Fort Dodge, 106 degrees in Des Moines and Marshalltown, and 105 degrees in Carroll and Ottumwa.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded locations. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes. Employers with outdoor crews should schedule frequent rest breaks and monitor workers for signs of heat illness.
Conditions will begin to ease Monday night as temperatures fall into the 70s, with additional relief arriving Tuesday as highs trend lower across the region. Heat safety remains critical through Monday evening, and additional advisories could be issued if the dangerous heat persists.
