Des Moines, Iowa – Dangerously cold conditions are gripping Des Moines early Monday as gusty northwest winds combine with falling temperatures to create life-threatening wind chills and heightened roadway risks during the morning commute. Wind chills near 30 degrees below zero are making even short trips outside hazardous, while roads remain vulnerable to refreezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, wind chill values ranged from around 15 below zero in southern Iowa to near 30 below zero across central portions of the state early today. While winds are expected to gradually ease and temperatures slowly recover this afternoon, officials warn that frostbite can occur quickly in these conditions.

Major routes including I-35, I-80, and U.S. 65 are seeing increased risk for slick spots, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Iowa DOT crews are monitoring conditions, but the extreme cold limits the effectiveness of road treatments. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep extra distance between vehicles, and carry winter emergency supplies if travel is unavoidable.

The cold eases slightly later today, but more hazards are ahead. Snow chances return late Tuesday into Wednesday, followed by another blast of bitter cold expected toward the end of the week. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
