Des Moines, Iowa – Morning commuters across central Iowa are waking up to patchy fog and light drizzle, cutting visibility to around a mile or less in some areas. The National Weather Service says the reduced visibility could cause slower traffic and hazardous driving conditions through 8 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the fog is widespread across much of the state’s central counties, including Des Moines, Ames, Mason City, Fort Dodge, and Marshalltown. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low beam headlights, and allow extra time for their morning drive.
Areas along Interstates 35, 80, and 235 could see rapidly changing visibility, with pockets of thicker fog reducing sightlines even further. Rural roads may be more challenging due to lingering mist and wet pavement from light drizzle.
Conditions should improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise and winds increase, helping to disperse the fog. However, early travelers should remain cautious until the advisory expires.
