Des Moines, Iowa – Fire danger is climbing across central Iowa today as strong south winds and dry fields combine to create conditions ripe for rapid fire spread. The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Special Weather Statement warning that any fires that ignite could move quickly, especially in cropland and grassy areas.
According to the National Weather Service, winds will blow from the south at 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph through this afternoon and evening. Relative humidity values near 30% will further dry out vegetation, increasing the risk of accidental fires.
The elevated fire danger includes all of central Iowa, covering areas from Ames and Fort Dodge to Des Moines, Marshalltown, and Newton. Residents are urged to avoid burning and to take precautions when using machinery that could spark — including tractors and vehicles operating near dry grass or crop residue.
Conditions are expected to ease after sunset as winds weaken slightly and humidity rises. However, another breezy day Sunday will keep fire danger elevated before rain showers move in Sunday night.
