DES MOINES, Iowa – Central Iowa will bake under late-summer heat this weekend as temperatures climb into the mid-90s, with a chance for storms late Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, highs will hit 91 degrees Friday and soar to 96 on Saturday. South winds up to 18 mph may make the heat feel more oppressive, with triple-digit heat index values expected in parts of Polk, Story, and Dallas counties.

Saturday night will stay warm, with lows only dropping to around 71. The heat continues Sunday with highs in the low 90s, though cloud cover will build. By late Sunday night, a 20% chance of thunderstorms moves in, bringing the first break in an otherwise dry stretch.

Travelers should plan for sun glare and increased air conditioning demand through Monday. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor work during peak afternoon hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors as the heat lingers.

Conditions cool slightly into midweek, with highs near 84 by Thursday and a 40% chance of showers Wednesday night.

Warnings for heat-related illness remain a concern through the weekend as the hot, dry pattern holds.
